Projects with Rita Sá
My collaboration with my sister, the visual artist Rita Sá, is almost lifelong. Throughout this website, you will find her multiple participations in diverse projects. In this section, you can get to know the projects for which Rita Sá was invited as a collaborator/ cocreator.
In the multidimensional and fragmentary project ‘a body as listening – resonant cartography of music (im)materialities’ Rita Sá cocreated different outputs:
- The lecture performance ‘Are you there? resonant cartography of music (im)materialities’ was cocreated with Rita Sá (videos/animations);
- The virtual installation www.abodyaslistening.com was made in cocreation with Rita, the designer Ana Viana and the web developer Nuno Bengalito;
- There are several illustrations created by Rita Sá for the book ‘a body as listening – resonant cartography of music (im)materialities’
- The cover and artwork illustrations of the record a body as listening, released by Clean Feed were also created by Rita Sá.
The performance for young audiences ‘Inside the head nothing is clear‘ commissioned by Fábrica das Artes, CCB, for Big Bang Festival in 2014 was cocreated with Rita Sá.
In through this looking glass (2010) a giant mobile was created by Rita as a scenic and performative element.
Besides the illustrations for the record ‘a body as listening’, other records have Rita’s illustrations:
Ways of notseeing (with Savina Yannatou), released by Clean feed in 2020;
Almost a Song (with Luís J Martins), released by Shhpuma in 2013.

Instances of Commediation, 2009
Instances of Commediation, 2009
Installation by Rita Sá
Sound composition: Joana Sá
Sound Recording and Production: Eduardo Raon
Instances of Commediation is a multichannel installation that reflects on the abrupt changes that are occurring on social relationships deriving from the emergence of new “communicational spaces”, through social media. The set up is envisioned to recreate the multiplicity of environments we live in today, along with our spatial impermanence. Five LCD screens show different perspectives of the same events that are occurring. These events are fictional and start as watercolor paintings that are later animated. This process of remediation (Bolter and Grusin 2000) and of the adjustment of an elder medium to a new one, comes almost as an analogy to the adjustment of our traditional social behaviors to new spaces of social interaction.

‘¼ or Fractions of a room’, 2008
Fractions Of a Room
Site specific installation by Rita Sá at Plataforma Revólver, 2008
Sound composition: Joana Sá
“Fractions of a Room explores the spatial travesty which takes place in a house at the moment when the owners are moving. The constant mutation of the owners or the inhabitants of the house directly correspond to the inevitable mutations of the space’s identity. The artist carried out research on the room in which her work is now housed, registering the irregularities of the surfaces, the infiltrations, the stains on the floor, and dissecting what this evidence may reveal. In the artist’s work, the room is transformed into a stage, and the scenes, in which the daily tasks of what Erving Goffman calls social roles unfold, are constantly created and altered. And so, walls are painted-another gesture of sedimentation- furniture is changed, lighting is altered, new wallpaper is glued to the wall. In each exhibition, there is an attempt to erase the previous traces, to create a new spatial, and more importantly to introduce spaces of thinking”.
